I stumbled upon this video a few days ago. I was completely captivated. Dv8 has some really amazing stuff out there.
You should really watch the rest of this film on youtube
curious to hear anyone's thoughts
2. The study of the ramifications, promises, and potential dangers of technologies that will enable us to overcome fundamental human limitations, and the related study of the ethical matters involved in developing and using such technologies.
Transhumanism states that we should improve the human species, right?
In every manner they are trying to build an alpha-being. However is this not an entirely self-defeating cause of action, for human beings as a species will never reside entirely on the same level, and whatever there is that is great, there shall always be better. To shape our own destiny is something that fascinates us, (and I believe such freedom is one of the growing attractions of websites such as Second Life where one may shape and design one’s avatar down to the very thickness of their hair and ankles, choose where they are, behave as they wish). Indeed the shaping and defining of the human race, I think was explored by a certain Mr Hitler, if anyone remembers, and that didn’t go too well.
Claims that transhumanism arose from periods of thought such as the Enlightenment are preposterous, there may be a theory of personal alleviation, certain enough, surely every person in the world will do their best to further themselves, to make themselves more intelligent, better looking, fitter, faster and wiser. Is this in direct competition, I suppose it is a fight to supremacy. There will always be someone fitter, faster and wiser, however we may endeavour to improve ourselves.
One only needs to look at the current trend in self-improvement in young girls starving themselves to make themselves thinner, to see how disastrously this will end.
To speak of removing illness- this shall not happen, unless we can cheat death (and I here state that I hope to the heavens that we do not, a world without death would have to be an elitist world, a world without birth, of constant sameness).
See the bullshit I can come up with when I’m supposed to be writing an essay?
Hm... now pleased with last post so will throw another question into the air and see if anybody catches it- this is fun!- and I'm feeling naughty now.
The author, the writer, as a function... is a storyteller, an entertainer- yes? no? Or an activist, a political mover with the power to change things.
How much influence does a writer have? Enough to change the world?
Had dear old G.W. Bush been watching too much Lord of the Rings?
So an author... musician... rapper... artist... beyond being openly controvesial, how much power do we thing artists HAVE in the real world? Tell me, I'm dieing to know! ;-)
Ah! Lovely this stuff is. My thanks to dear little Seanbug for putting me onto this, and by way of beginning I shall introduce myself.
I am Jedediah, a fine young Irishman with a passion for literature and sixties protest music, and I have decided to become a poet. Fine claim I hear you cry, but I care not for practicalities, only passions. If poetry is today's order of the day, then with poetry I shall comply.
Feed it back, pass it on, always delighted. JED x
Who were you?
Who thought yourself so brave and true,
Were you lord or king,
Did the divine lights shine upon you?
You were a soldier.
There are no soldiers here.
short sweet perhaps, my apologies but my brain will work no more tonight...
children of the world
i command you
hear my call
break off the barrier the drew around you
and tear down the holy wall
for you are each born free
and no god can give you rank
no king may tell you yet
you must submit to mark
the ousla and the officers, the watchers and the hunters
now you are young and know nothing,
but you shall become like them
In time you will find these walls settle in
you could not live without them
so fight them now, fight them hard
listen to the voice of the free
let them put no chains upon your mind
for the chains will make you fear
